Swedish Dowry Chest from 1788
THIS IS SOMETHING SPECIAL!!
A Swedish dowry chest.
History: in the 18th & 19th centuries, Swedish mothers traditionally acquired one of these chests on the birth of their daughter. They were commonly made of cedar wood as this one is for its natural aroma, (which is no longer evident). The mother would then, throughout her daughters life, fill it with useful items that she may need once married. This would include such things as linen, cutlery, utensils and the like.
This particular dowry chest dates back to the birth of Anna Carlsdotter who was born on 26th May 1788. As the hand painted inscription on the underside of the lid tells. She married in 1808, which is when the chest and its contents would have been given to her as her dowry or part of it at least. A friend of mine has done some research and we think found records of this lady and her marriage which you can see in the photos.
The blacksmith made metal work around the outside of the chest appears to have been added at a later date, perhaps for the marriage, hence the hearts.
A truly wonderful antique with a wonderful story. Heavy and practical, the interior also still has the candle box, this is a glorious piece of furniture and a wonderful conversation piece.
Measurements: 90 x 61 x 49cm high
