Set of Four French Antique Absynth Plates
A rare little find in the form of a set of four antique Absynth saucers.
These antique Absynth saucers which are sometimes referred to as “tip trays” were used in 19th century French bars.
They served a dual purpose as a coaster to serve the Absynth on and to indicate the price of the serving. The colours around the rim (which were hand painted), of the plates also denoted the price, so it was easy to decipher from the edges when they were stacked.
Now they are great to use for display, maybe as candle plates, side plates or little cake plates. Alternatively as a collection on the wall.
Three of them have nibbles on the underside, which is commensurate with their age and use. However it doesn’t detract from their appearance.
The 25f plate as you can see from the photos has at sometime in its life had the glaze rubbed off and the price repainted, possibly due to a price rise.
Measurements: approx. 10cm diameter.
