Rare Antique Order Of Druids Lodge Trunk
This is a very rare antique trunk.
The typography on the top of the lid reads:
THE OOD (Order of Druids)
PRIDE OF BOROBRIDGE
LODGE No. 1714
On the underside of the lid it reads:
LODGE OPENED JANUARY 28 1884
Borobridge would now be known as Boroughbridge in N.Yorks as far as we are aware.
A little bit of history. . .
This Order Of Druids was a benevolent friendly society, similar to the Freemasons or Foresters.
Unlike the Freemasons, the Druids were not a secret society. They had a number of high profile members including the young Winston Churchill.
Not to be confused with the religious group of Druids.
On the 28th of November 1781 some gentlemen decided to create an association (Order of Druids) in the Kings Arms Tavern near Oxford Street. Together they formed a friendly society with the aim of helping out those less fortunate than themselves who found themselves upon hard times.
The Kings Arms became lodge No.1 and spawned the creation of a number of other lodges being founded elsewhere.
By 1831 there were already 193 lodges and membership was is in the region of 200,000.
This trunk would have held valuable pieces and possibly papers as it has three locks, not working now unfortunately, however this means that to open the trunk three separate keys, held by three separate trusted members would be required.
A perfect piece of extra storage with an amazing history. Ideal size for a neat coffee table/conversation piece.
Measurements:71.5 x 48 x 33cm high
