This is a fabulous rare piece of French ecclesiastical history. 
Hand carved and hand painted. 
It would originally have been part of a larger piece where a figure of a Saint or the Madonna would have been displayed in a shrine. Placed either in a church or on the edge of a French village. 
It has three legs as you can see in the photos, it would have been fixed to the larger piece where the 4th leg would be. This is not detrimental to it standing up. 
This absolutely stunning piece would have formed the top or roof of the shrine. 
A truly magnificent talking piece for the home or office or even in a retail situation. 
It is as found and may benefit from a clean, which would possibly bring out the colours, however we like to leave things as they come to us, to an extent, here at SaltMill Vintage and let the the next custodian decide on that one.
