This is a wonderful, very old trunk.
 
It quite possibly came from a bank or a solicitors office where they would store all the correspondence for each year separately in case of a need to refer back to them. It is a simple utilitarian design as it would have been stored possibly in a basement, but definitely out of public view, so had not need to be ornate.
 
There is some age related damage near the hinges on the lid which can be seen in the photos, however this does not affect the structure of the trunk nor detract from its overall charm.
