This is a large antique Eli Griffiths & Son of Birmingham late Victorian lantern. Circa 1880-1910.
Likely for railway or maritime use. Now great indoors or in the garden. 
In excellent condition with a glorious aged patina, used primarily to prevent the burning candle from being extinguished by wind or rain. 
The candle cup holds quite a large standard candle, which I didn’t have. I have used 4 x Christingle candles which give a great light. I will include these and more can be purchased easily on Amazon. I thought if the candles were burnt to different heights they would look good when lit!
