Antique Japanese Tansu Travelling Drawers
A fabulous antique Japanese Tansu mobile chest of drawers. Tansu’s became a feature of Japanese daily life from the mid 17th century to the early 20th century, this one probably dating to the mid 19th century. In keeping with the Japanese minimalist aesthetic they were rarely used as stationary furniture, so were kept in alcoves or store rooms out of site. The handles at either side are to make carrying easier. There would once have been a door in the bottom right corner, making the drawers behind it extra secure. These drawers may well have been used for transporting the owners tea, which was highly prized. However that has long gone during its life. A gorgeous set of multi drawers for use in the home, this would make a fantastic and unusual bedside cabinet or side table.
