This lovely little French drawer, would originally have held powdered paint, specifically Oxyde Noir (black oxide).
 
It has a lift off lid that makes it useful storage even today. I believe it may be made from mahogany wood.
 
Nice for art supplies or crafting or even in the bathroom to hold the annoying little bits that hang around.
