This unglazed terracotta oil jar originates from the South West of France. Sometimes called a cruche.

It has a distinct restricted neck with a wide rim for pouring. The small hole was deliberate to prevent the oil going rancid.

The V shaped decorative ridges are finger pinched, which is a classic marking of rural pottery from the 18th & 19th century.

Pottery like this was made by local artisans, using regional clay.

A beautiful piece of French decor, as a stand alone piece or as part of a collection. In beautiful neutral tones.
