Antique French Lamp Table with Foxed Mirror Top
A beautiful French piece.
This glorious antique lamp table has been decorated using Verre églomisé. This is a term used to describe a technique to add both a design and gilding to the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish.
An 18th century French art dealer and decorator, Jean-Baptiste Glomy was responsible for its revival.
The technique of back painting glass actually dates back to pre-Roman times. A key historical period of the art was actually in Italy in the 13th - 16th centuries.
This fabulous lamp table, has now foxed on most of the gilded glass areas, which gives it it’s own beauty and unique design, brought about through its long life and use.
The drawer and sides are also gilded using verre églomisé and the inner drawer is lined in a padded fabric.
The paint is worn and it has had a little historic wood worm over its years, however it is still a uniquely stunning piece of furniture.
Measurements: 42 x 36 x 61cm high
