Antique Cast Iron Barnstaple Roadside Way Marker
£140.00Price
An extremely rare cast iron mile marker.
The name Barum is the old name for Barnstaple. Being a corruption of the Latin name Barnastapolitum.
Barum was mentioned by Shakespeare and the name was revived in Victorian times in several contemporary novels.
The sign would likely have been fixed to the side of a building along the route taken by stage coaches.
The letters are all in relief and black in colour.
Very unusual in that it not only doesn’t mention the miles, just that it was 9 and a quarter, or that it actually says from Barum not to Barum.
